WASHINGTON RESPONDS TO JIGGA

That was quick. Less than a day after Hov's track hit the streets, a Washington MC, Pro'Verb, has answered Jay-Z's diss to DeShawn Stevenson and the Washington Wizards - and it's not bad at all!

How good has this playoff series been? Considering the Cavs will probably win it 4-1, DeShawn Stevenson's antics really have done wonders to inject some feeling into what could have been a forgettable first round series. And it's good to see some big hits coming back into the NBA, in fact we're seeing some of the hardest fouls on a superstar since the Bad Boys era. (That's Michael Jordan hidden underneath the legs and arms of Dennis Rodman and Isiah Thomas.)

LEBRON/JAY-Z VS DESHAWN/SOULJA BOY

Unless you've been living under a rock, you already know about the LeBron James/DeShawn Stevenson beef (quick recap - Stevenson calls LeBron "overrated", LeBron gets mad, calls himself Jay-Z and calls Stevenson Soulja Boy, Stevenson gets Soulja Boy to sit courtside at a Cavs-Wizards playoff game, Wizards try to knock LeBron's head off, LeBron leads Cavs to many victories over the Wizards). In DeShawn's defence, he's not the sharpest pencil in the box - anyone want to charge a few purchases to his American Express Black Card?

Well now Jay-Z has officially entered this NBA/hip-hop beef, recording a track taking aim at DeShawn and sticking up for his buddy LeBron. This is history kids, as it's the first time where the owner of a rival team (Jay-Z is a part-owner of the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets) has dissed a player on another team for dissing a guy who isn't even on his squad. To be honest, it's the first time an NBA owner has ever dissed a player on a hip-hop track. Listen to it below, it's over the Too $hort Blow the Whistle beat. Hopefully this will start a trend in the NBL, perhaps with D-Mac's kids firing some venomous verbal darts at Andrew Vlahov.

DJ ROB DINERO REMIX - LOLLIPOP

Here's a dope remix of Lil Wayne's current club smash Lollipop, by DJ Rob Dinero. It twists the track into a 2 Live Crew-style Miami Bass banger (love the use of the Head, Head and More Head 'pella). Dinero is the king of remixes and blends right now, if you're an XO regular you'd recognise his remix of 50 Cent's I Get Money that I drop pretty much every week. Check out his myspace page for some more hot ish.

BIG BOI INTERVIEW

I was going through files on my old PC the other day, and what did I find but a bunch of old interviews I've done over the past five or so years that never made it to my website.

This was one of my most anticipated interviews, with Big Boi (Antwan Patton) from Outkast. The interview got pushed back 24 hours because he was busy in the studio, and the next day when we finally got connected, it was 4pm US time and he was just waking up. The first five minutes of the interview was basically Big Boi groaning as an answer to every question (it also explains his final statement to me), but once he actually was awake it was all good. The interview was eventually condensed into a small news piece in Urban Hitz magazine (RIP) and it was done around the time Got Purp Vol. 2 just went on sale.

Got Purp Vol. 2 has a nice mix of street and soul tracks, was that your aim or simply how the album naturally evolved?
We just wanted to keep it funky, you know. We wanted to show every different aspect to the label – not just hip-hop or crunk.

Are you happy with how the album has been received by both critics and the general public?
Oh yeah man, we’ve had excellent feedback from everybody who’s listened to the album.

Kryptonite was a surprise hit in Australia – a lot of Southern hip-hop isn’t well-received down here [NOTE: Probably should have clarified "in mainstream R&B clubs"] – so you should be happy about that.
Oh word? That’s good man. Gotta make it down there to check it out. Show you guys how to party.

Yeah, someone needs to show Australia how to get crunk. Some people in the clubs down here dance to crunk music like they’re 2-stepping to slow jams.
Hell naw! [laughs]

Can you explain what exactly "Kryptonite" is?
It’s whatever you want it to be – whatever floats your boat. Whatever gets your adrenalin going. Doesn’t have to be smoking, just whatever gets you feeling like you’re on top of the world, like you can run motherfuckers over.

Do you feel any pressure with Purple Ribbon to do Outkast numbers? It’s hard to go diamond every time...
We’re not really trying to do the Outkast thing. A lot of the guys on the label have been on Outkast albums, we’re just trying to give them a little shine for themselves.

Bubba Sparxxx and Killer Mike are two guys on Purple Ribbon who have had some success in the past, what’s needed for them to take the next step?
We just need to put our foot on the gas and go hard with their product. I really believe in it, so we just need to get it out there to the people. I give all my artists a lot of control but still try to help them get out the best quality product possible.

Some artists seem to not get into the behind the scenes side of the music business, but you seem to relish being in an executive position.
Yeah, it’s cool, I do enjoy that part of the business, but I’ve also got a dope team behind me. They help me get everything moving, but you know I’ve been producing, writing, everything like that for a long time, it was only natural to get into artist management.

The Black Eyed Peas have said they’re going to actively try and sign Australian hip-hop acts, would you ever look outside the States to start a worldwide empire?
Oh most definitely man. You don’t have to be from the States, or from Atlanta... it’s like a stew man, if there are some ingredients you don’t have, you need to scoop them up and add them. We’re looking for anyone with skills, with originality – we’re not afraid to take risks.

If you could sign any artist today, who would it be?
Michael Jackson. Hell yeah! [laughs]

Two of your biggest Outkast hits, Bombs Over Baghdad and Ghettomusick, are both ridiculously quick tracks, almost verging on an electro-style tempo. What’s your favourite of those two?
Bombs Over Baghdad. That one is just crazy and every time I heard that track I think of the video, which is one of my favourite Outkast videos.

Besides your own artists, what hip-hop are you listening to now?
A little Three 6 Mafia, also listen to a lot of old school soul music and old school hip-hop, artists like Too $hort, N.W.A., some Sade, Kate Bush, things like that.

What inspires you to create music?
God, of course.

Outside of music, what do you get up to?
I do a little bowling, I’ve got a nice little bowling game. I breed dogs... but music really consumes most of my time. I’ve got the label now so that takes up a lot of my time, I’m always producing, so there’s not a lot of time outside of that.

What about sports?
Oh yeah, big sports fan...

Do you follow the Atlanta Hawks or are they too sorry to support right now?
What you said [laughs]. I follow mostly football, I don’t really follow basketball too much, but I run with the Detroit Pistons.

You were on Australian TV screens recently, with your little cameo in an episode of Chappelle’s Show. How did that get hooked up?
Dave Chappelle called me and said he really wanted me to be on the show and I was like, “Hell yeah”. When I got there, he asked if before I performed, if I’d have time to do a little improv sketch, just going off the top of our heads, freestyling. So going back and forth with Dave Chappelle, that was real cool.

So those lines were all yours – "I’m playing tennis on the moon"?
Yeah, Dave was like, "Man, you good!" I was just having fun with it.

Will we ever see Big Boi in Australia?
[Very enthusiastically] Hell yeah, I can’t wait. Hopefully this year. If a lot of people read this interview, hopefully some motherfuckers can set up a trip and bring us all down there.

Cool, thanks for your time man.
Hey man, sorry about the tiredness and all, we’ll speak again, peace and blessings to you.

31 FLAVOURS (MELB) THIS THURSDAY NIGHT

Melbournites, I'll see you at 31 Flavours this Thursday night (April 24) for a massive Anzac Day eve party! Melbourne clubs have a stigma of playing mainly corny music and being stuck in 1996, and that's true - except 31 Flavours is one of the few clubs down there that actually pushes the boundaries with the music they play. There's already some Sydney people heading down for the night so it will be huge!

RIDIN' IN A UFO

While this isn't exactly an answer to Tay Dizm's Beam Me Up, it's a cool-ass alien track nonetheless. From the crew who brought you the GET ALIEN movement, CTMC (Certified Trouble Making Click - that's Monchichi and Fuzz pictured right, two of the CTMCers going OFFFFFFFF at XO) presents Ridin' in a UFO, produced by Big Noize. Expect to hear it at XO soon!

BEAM ME UP

I don't know if Fuzz and the rest of the team down with the Get Alien movement will be happy or pissed with this track, Beam Me Up by Tay Dizm feat. T-Pain and Rick Ross. Just check out the hook:

My Chevy sits so high up from the floor,
I feel like I'm an alien in a UFO,
I go *random alien noises*,
Beam me up.

I'll track down the instrumental and get the wheels in motion for a CTMC remix.

EVER SO CLEAR

For the past week or so I've been listening to nothing but old Geto Boys albums, so it's with great pride that I present the number one midget rapper in the game and one third of the GBs, Bushwick Bill! Also known as Dr. Wolfgang Vincent Gobin Bushwickin the Barbarian Mother Funky Stay High Dollar Billstir (really). Listen to this track, Ever So Clear, one of the most vivid storytelling tracks in hip-hop history. It's the first-hand account of how Bushwick got drunk, threatened to kill his girlfriend's child unless she helped him commit suicide, then in the ensuing fight had his eye shot out. Naturally, they used a picture of Bushwick in the hospital with his eyeball hanging out on the next Geto Boys album cover.

THE GOOD, THE GREAT AND THE UGLY

Harris Publications, the publishing company who have pretty much cornered the "urban" (hate that word) market, have interesting covers this month for their three main magazines, SLAM, King and XXL. FUN FACT: I've written for both SLAM and XXL - writing for SLAM was the highlight of my journalistic career. Anyway, back to the covers. Two of them are ridiculously good, one is at the other end of the spectrum of greatness. The Dwight Howard one above, good. The Stacey Dash one, below, awesome... then scroll down to see the Zoolander edition of XXL, featuring The Game.

HELL YES SON.

What the hell was this dude thinking?

MARK CUBAN #1

Thankfully, the one sane owner in the NBA has spoken out about the Sonics possibly relocating to Oklahoma City. Mark Cuban, billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks, had this to say to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer...

"I'm going to wait to get all the information," he said before the Sonics' game against the Mavericks. "(But) my preference is the Sonics stay in Seattle. My prejudice is against having a Dustbowl Division in this part of the country because I don't think in the big picture that helps the NBA and I think the bigger market helps the NBA."

"There could be information that sways me," he said. "If they come back and said the Oklahoma City index is 200 when it comes to watching the NBA on TNT or ABC, and no one in Seattle watches, then OK maybe there's information that goes beyond market size.

"My prejudice is to vote them in but like everything else in the NBA, (the vote) will be 29-1."

He was then rumoured to allegedly think to himself, "David Stern, suck my balls."

Keep your pimp hand strong, Mark.

Don't forget - XO @ HUNTER BAR every Saturday night. I love the new flyer. Even though XO has been going for two and a half years, packed to capacity every night, maybe one day we'll be as big as the clubs who send their promoters down to XO to tell our loyal, awesome, paying customers they can go to their crappy (and empty) clubs for free. We see you! Don't be mad because people would rather pay to have a guaranteed great night than have a boring, depressing evening for free.

GANGSTER OF LOVE

The Geto Boys are in my top tier of all-time favourite artists - thanks for asking, the others are 2 Live Crew, Biggie, and Tha Alkaholiks. While most GB tracks are about hood tales, they've got some funny as hell stuff too. This track falls into the latter category - Gangster of Love. There's quite a bit of history behind this one as there's two versions of it, basically they had to get rid of the Steve Miller Band The Joker sample used in the original version, so the track was re-released with a Lynyrd Skynyrd Sweet Home Alabama sample. FUN FACT: It's one of the few hip-hop tracks that uses the mighty "c word" - seriously, it's as explicit a track as you'll find. Wrap your ears around both versions of the track below, and look out for some more classic Geto Boys tracks here very soon!

KEVIN DURANT > MAGIC JOHNSON

That title was just to get your attention. But seriously, check out this statline from Durant in Seattle's 2OT win over the Denver Nuggets today:

Kevin Durant 37 PT 11-24 FG 13-13 FT 2-4 3P 8 RB 9 AS 0 BL 3 ST 5 TO 2 PF 51 MN

He also hit TWO buzzer beating threes, the first to send the game into overtime then another to send the game into a second overtime. Check out the second shot, 10 feet behind the three-point line, while being guarded by Marcus Camby.

PRIMOZ BREZEC > YOUR LIFE

It's not very often that an athlete such as Primoz Brezec enters your life. He is possibly the most unique NBA player - in terms of personality - not named Ron Artest. And Ron-Ron actually had a lot to do with Primoz's birthing. You see, Primoz is a 7'1" Slovenian center who plays for the Toronto Raptors, but he was originally drafted by the Indiana Pacers in 2000. He played for them during their super-gangsta era, when they had guys like Artest and ex-Sydney King Stephen Jackson on the team, and Primoz learnt English by (1) listening to these guys talk and (2) hip-hop. So now he calls his coach "gangsta" and ends all of his lines with "you know what I'm sayin'". Check out these Primoz anecdotes.

In the hallway outside the Toronto locker room, Raptors GM Bryan "Dapper Dan" Colangelo is holding court with me and three of the local writers. As we discuss some of the big trades that went down this season, Primoz Brezec walks by and he is completely drenched in sweat from the pregame warmup.
As Brezec passes our group, he raps (loudly), "She said she wants a hood ni**a!" We all stare at each other for a few seconds trying to decipher what just happened, leading to Colangelo apologizing for the Slovenian's gangsta ways, and everyone doubling over in laughter.
- SLAM Online

Primoz Brezec, the newest big man in town, studied English in his native Slovenia before landing in the NBA with Indiana. His classroom was the locker room, and his current speech can best be described as: Euro-boy-in-the-hood.
"I didn't know the slang and all the bad words when I came, you know what I am saying," says Brezec. "But I was pretty good, man, you know what I'm saying?"
- National Press

Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace said the only nickname he's come up with for Brezec so far is "gangsta."
Told that Brezec was seen jogging through the streets of Indianapolis during the time when most players are just waking up from their afternoon naps, Wallace said, "See, that's gangsta."
Turns out Brezec just wanted to get to a nearby Starbucks for a hot chocolate before the first bus left for Conseco Fieldhouse.
- Detroit Free Press

"Sam's [Raptors coach Sam Mitchell] gangster," Brezec recently told a throng of media gathered around his locker. "As I told you, I just respect the coach and (the fact) they're not scared. They trust in their players and they don't take no (stuff) from nobody. If I do something wrong I don't have any problem with them cussing me out. If I do something wrong tell me straight to my face. That's what he'll do." - HOOPSWORLD

A spy sitting courtside tells me during one timeout the Magaic mascot, a not particularly fearsome looking dragon, was goofing around near the Raptor bench.
Seems Primoz Brezec, for some reason known only to Primoz Brezec, took great umbrage at a stuffed animal having fun and slugged the thing. Then he tells him, 'bleep you, I'll bleep you up.'

THIS WEEK AT XO...

What's wrong with this picture? (a) I'm not wearing my glasses (b) I'm holding a bottle of water instead of a bottle of whiskey/bourbon/vodka/gin/beer (c) All of the above.

The "THIS WEEK AT XO" posts are generally for when we've got a special guest at the club. This week we've got the usual crew on (plus DJ Naiki, who's part of the XO extended family), but seeing as though XO's lineup is the DJ equivalent of the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s, every week is essentially a week full of special guests. So come down this week, meet me by the bar (I'm there from 10pm) and buy me a drink. In exchange I will do the most awesome set you have ever heard, and that's a promise.

P.S. Stay out of the DJ booth unless.

XO PODCAST - 02-04-08

Another ghetto classic podcast! We're not going to be keeping the archives up for as long as before, so generally you've got two weeks to listen to each podcast. With the individual tracks I post I'm more lenient, you've got a two month window there.

02-04-08 PODCAST TRACKLISTING
