I love cool samples in hip-hop tracks, and I love Family Guy - this track combines both of these things! Shame there's no Quagmire vocal samples, but you can't have your cake and eat it too I guess. (Where did that saying come from anyway, what's the point of not being able to eat your cake?)

XO PODCAST - 29-10-08

This podcast was done a week ago due to scheduling conflicts in the XO studio a.k.a. the Hitfactory, which is why there's no mention of the Ballers Night and Blazin MC's birthday on there. So I'll mention it here - Ballers Night and Blazin MC's birthday at XO this Saturday night! Shame we can't get Homicide down here to host the night, next time he's in Sydney I'm going to make it happen though. PUT IT IN YA MOUTH

Do I have a treat for you. I found this on my old PC the other day - my first (and only) street mixtape, Put it in Ya Mouth. This is an underrated classic IMHO. It came out almost exactly five years ago, during my glory days - living in my favourite apartment of all time (Room 112 on Castlereagh St - yep, that was the actual apartment number) which came complete with an arcade machine, NBA Jam Tournament Edition. This was also the time when I was really starting to kill it in terms of being a DJ as well, working from Thursday-Saturday and some Sundays on top of that. When I did this mix DJs were selling their mixes hard in the record stores (Anthem, Soul Sense, Central etc) but right when I dropped mine the MIPI started arresting people for copyright nonsense so I didn't do another one for years.

Anyway go download Put in in Ya Mouth here. I tried to keep it of a nice blend of what I was playing in the clubs at the time and some other cool stuff thrown in for good measure. Oh, and how good is the CD artwork?

THE BEVERLY HILLS COP SONG

Not a screen shot from Beverly Hills Cop, it's actually me and Carl Alley showing the new system we'll be using to stop people getting into the DJ booth at XO.
If this blog was rated by the same people who do movie ratings, it'd probably be MA15+ (adult themes, medium level coarse language, some nudity, sexual allusions). Having said that, I try to keep the cursing to a minimum in my writing - which means I can't really type the full title of this track by TJ Santana. Just listen to it. Trust me.

VEGAS

People always tell me that I would absolutely love Las Vegas - it's pretty much a city made for degenerates. Is that a compliment? Who knows. What I do know is this new track by XV feat. Deontre Blayz, Vegas, is hot. It's not my typical sound, but then again this blog has recently featured music by ZZ Top and Hilary Duff, so I'm not even sure what my "typical sound" is right now. Where else besides this blog will you go from clowning s--t like Boats n Hoes to a remake of one of my ultimate chill tracks, Everything's Gonna Be Alright by Freeway feat. Young Chris. Of course, the original by Naughty By Nature is a true classic, but this version certainly does it justice. I could seriously listen to this on repeat for 24 hours straight (don't hold me to that though).

It's not very often I get to pick up some Reeboks - for whatever reason size 15/16s rarely make it here - so another cheers to Kaylani at Pitt St Footlocker for finding these for me. Oh yes, Hilary Duff! This is my new corny/pop track that I'll play at XO to make the superthugs on the dancefloor give me the sideways glare. You can't get much whiter than this song - by Hilary Duff, sampling Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus - Reach Out. I'm guessing this could be my new Sweet Home Alabama a.k.a. the track I play when I go from "happy" to "goofy drunk whiteboy". FUN FACT: I think I've played Sweet Home Alabama the past three weeks at XO.

I knew John Rillie would be the first to respond to my "FIND ME A NEW HOOPS TEAM" post, which means the Townsville Crocodiles are the early favourites to be my new NBL squad (as a fan, not a player - although if the Crocs need a guy who'll only take up one point under the points cap, I'm your man). Here's what JR had to say to sway me to the Crocs...

MY BIRTHDAY GIFT TO MYSELF

Seeing as though NBA 2K9 was released on my birthday, I had to pick up a copy as soon as I woke up (at 2pm) on October 7. Since then I've had a real love/hate relationship with 2K9. First game I played Kobe kicked my ass - no comments from the Kobe fans please - and since then I've been improving slowly but surely. Thankfully the inbound pass glitch hasn't come back after showing up during my second session. And for all the improvements and uber-realistic gameplay, the one new feature that I'm loving more than anything is the reintroduction of some FMV (full motion video) in the game intros! I haven't seen that since NBA Live 99, the last incarnation of Live that me and my friends well and truly thrashed.

FIND ME A NEW HOOPS TEAM

Check out my hops! If a NBL team is looking for a 12th man, minimum wage guy who can also DJ during pre-game/half-time, let me know. (P.S. The picture above was taken 12 years and 40kg ago.)
The three professional basketball teams closest to me all disappeared from the sporting landscape during the NBA/NBL offseason. Two of them - the Brisbane Bullets and Seattle Sonics - were closest to me in terms of I’ve always supported them, and the Sydney Kings were literally closest to me, as in their home stadium is (well was) right around the corner from my apartment and you could find me at most of their home games.

So now I’m a hoops orphan in need of a loving foster home, NBL and NBA. There are a few teams I’ve already ruled out, a few teams I’ve always had a soft spot for, and my reasons are explained below. Help me choose a team! Let’s start with the NBL, and the teams team I could never support...

NBL - NEVER
Adelaide 36ersWhy: Their fans (and various members of their media brigade) are certified nutcases. And one of those two groups of people helped get PBT (at the time the only basketball magazine in Australia) canned. I’m a big fan of Brett Maher though.

NBL - SOFT SPOT
Cairns TaipansWhy: I’m a Queenslander.

Townsville CrocodilesWhy: Queenslander! Plus I’m a fan of their current shooting guard (John Rillie) and their former shooting guard (Simon Kerle). And Homicide Williams is a cool guy to hang with in the club.

Gold Coast BlazeWhy: Queenslander! And the coach of the Blaze (Brendan Joyce) was my high school coach.

Wollongong HawksWhy: I used to enjoy my road trips to Wollongong to watch the Hawks play. Apart from the near-fatal car accident one time, I generally have fond memories of Wollongong. Been a Kavossy Franklin fan since his time with the Kings as well.

Now if you’re reading this and you’re connected to a NBL team, I’m looking for the following players/coaches/management to give me their sales pitch as to why I should jump on their team’s bandwagon. Conversely, if you’d like to pitch why I shouldn’t support your team due to the fact that teams I follow end up vanishing into thin air (or Oklahoma), that’s OK too. I’m expecting a representative of the Townsville Crocodiles to be the first to reply! I’ll update whenever I get a response.

Houston RocketsWhy: Tracy McGrady - the most overrated player in the history of the NBA. He took this title from Vince Carter, only because he isn’t even rated anymore.

NBA - SOFT SPOT
Boston CelticsWhy: My Irish heritage lends itself to supporting the Celtics, plus I’ve always been a fan of Kevin Garnett. The fact that Ray Allen (ex-Sonic) is there doesn’t hurt either. However, I think it’s really bad karma to start supporting a team the year they win the title.

Toronto RaptorsWhy: Nathan Jawai. That’s about it.

Utah JazzWhy: They always do a great job of knocking the Rockets out of the playoffs, plus it’s only a matter of time before Deron Williams dunks on Kobe. They lose cool points for having Carlos “stabbed a blind man in the back” Boozer on the roster though.

New York KnicksWhy: For some reason I always loved using the Knicks in the old NBA Live games, even though I was never a true fan of the team. Another plus is their logo is cool and a selection of my all-time favourite players have been Knicks at some stage - Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson, Xavier McDaniel, Charles Oakley. And the fact that they stink right now means it’s a perfect time to jump on the bandwagon, so I can use the “oh, I’ve been a Knick fan since the Starbury/Jerome James era” when they finally get good.

AMERICANS ARE DUMB

The stupidity of some Americans is difficult to comprehend.
