Another interview from the archives! With the Dogg Pound blokes touring next month, here's a look back into the mind of Daz from almost a decade ago - when things weren't so rosy in the Pound... still, it's funny as hell to read Dat N-word Daz going in on pretty much the entire music industry (besides Snoop, So So Def and 50 Cent).

What’s it like doing your own thing independently versus being a worker bee for a large label like Death Row?
I’ve got more control over my own shit, but I had control over my own shit at Death Row anyway. Because we make the music and give it to them. I’m more of an executive now, I’ve just signed a deal with Jermaine Dupri and So So Def. I’m really happy with that deal, looking forward to expanding my horizons there. I’ma still have Gangsta Advisory and my independency, but that’ll be more a distribution company, getting people manufacturing and distribution deals. I’ll get their record and put it in the stores for ‘em.

So I guess the So So Def thing sees you being more of an artist, and the rest of your business ventures is where you’re being more of the executive, more of a producer...
Yeah, I’m an artist on So So Def, but I’m producing my album, me and Jermaine. But I’ve still got my independency over there, because I’ll be making Daz records on So So Def. But as far as my company and putting records out for other people, I’ma keep doing that in terms of distributing the young kids’ records. Giving them a chance, people who can’t afford to put records out, like the underground artists. That’s where I was born in, the underground, so I still fuck with the underground.

When you look back at your days at Death Row – and I know there is a ton of animosity between you and those guys now – are your memories of being on the label good times or not?
With Death Row?

Yeah. I know there’s bad blood now, but what do you think about...
I think about good times, bullshit times, but it’s all a good experience, just like the army. It’s a real good experience for me to know what I know now. It’s bullshit now though, I don’t give a fuck about Death Row. Anyone on Death Row is my enemy. I’m cool with everybody. Just not fucking with anyone in red.

You won a big court case against Death Row a while back, have you got your money yet?
I’ve got half of it right now. I’m the happiest rapper living [laughs]. The way I’ve got it set up, my mom and my dad look after that money. I get $25,000 a month. The money is in an escrow account. Right now I need to keep going to court to get money from Suge, he’s hiding it. The money that I got before was in companies that couldn’t hide it…I sued Koch, I sued Time Warner. As soon as I put the lawsuit in, the money was stopped. All the money they had in there was on hold until the case finished. So now that we’ve got the money... he’s got cars, houses and shit so when he sells that shit, I’ma get mine.

You got any plans for that money?
I’m just keeping it for security. As far as me being secure, my kids being secure, my moms, my dad... you know what I mean. And I just signed with Jermaine Dupri, so that’s two pots of money. That’s money that I’m going to keep for myself, then I’m going to go over here and make more money. So I’m real satisfied.

From what I’ve read about you in the press, you seem like a very loyal dude...
I’m very loyal and humble until you fuck me. I play dumb to see if you’re going to play me. Everybody in the world should do that. Play dumb to see if somebody’s going to take advantage of you. And once they take advantage of you, beat the fuck out of them. That’s the motto that I live by. I’ve got a new book that my friend gave me, and I follow what this book says every day, it’s called “48 Laws of Power”. Heard of that book?

Nah I haven’t. [NOTE: I've read it since doing this interview.]
It’s a real good book man. Tells you about your enemies, concealing your thoughts, it’s a whole lot of shit that I live by now. I can’t really trust anybody in this rap game right now but Snoop Dogg and Jermaine Dupri. They’re my friends, and everybody else is just trying to get at me. Muthafuckas are dying these days, so who can you trust? You’ve got Death Row and Kurupt’s bitch ass giving our address out, we’re thinking he was our friend, so that relationship is over. Once you’re dead there’s no coming back.
I was about to ask you about Kurupt, and I think you’ve answered that question…
We’ll never be friends. The only thing he can do for me is kill Suge Knight, shut him up.

So if he called tomorrow and said he wanted to leave Death Row and do another Dogg Pound album with you...
I’d say, “yeah, come on over here baby”. Then beat the fuck out of him. As far as talking on the phone, I haven’t spoken with Kurupt in over two years and don’t plan on talking to him. I want to fuck his sister though.

Talking about beating the fuck out of people, I read about how Bad Azz was jumped by a bunch of guys from Death Row while Kurupt just stood around and watched.
Kurupt set him up. Suge told Kurupt to go talk to Bad Azz, and Kurupt was saying, “Oh I’ve missed everyone in the Pound. I’ve missed the homies, what are the homies doing?” Suge sent him over to say that shit.

Does Kurupt have anyone in his corner though? It seems as though anyone that was ever cool with him hates him now.
Ain’t nobody cool with Kurupt. Anybody that do some shit like that…it’s just like gangbanging. If you’re from this set…we call them Transformers. It’s like a Crip turning into a Blood. And muthafuckas been dying over this gangbang shit for years, I wish a lot of my homeboys were still alive. Like my homie L-Dogg. He was the first person in the Dogg Pound to get killed. He was Kurupt’s friend, he brought him to us. But we embraced L-Dogg like he was ours…but when he got killed, Kurupt didn’t even come to the funeral. That’s a lot of respect that Kurupt lost right there. I knew he was a bitch right then.

When’s "Death Row Killa" coming out?
I’ve got the movie and soundtrack ready to come out in October.

So it’s all done, ready to go?
Yeah, it’s done. Soopafly got the first single coming out, it’s called “A Message to Ricky”. If Kurupt want to get back, tell him to fight Soopafly. And I’ll fight Suge Knight.

Throw that on the DVD.
Hey, I’ll fight anybody. I was born for this. I’ve been in the gym, I’m cut up, six-packed out. I’ve been training – street training and hood training.

I don’t want to stick on the Suge subject for too long, because I know you are probably sick of questions about him...
I like talking about his ass. I make up shit about him every day. He’s a funny, fat character.

Well, one thing that I was curious to know, is did he change or was he always like he is? Did it just take a while for your eyes to be opened to his dealings?
He always been like that, but he also changed, in terms of how he dealt with us. When Tupac got killed we opened our eyes up to something different. We made Death Row, he didn’t make Death Row, we made Death Row. As far as you can see today, what does Death Row have to offer anybody? Nothing. The people who was on Death Row were me, Snoop and Nate Dogg and we’re still doing this shit. We all legends in this rap game. He’s like a fuckin’ Berry Gordy or something. See, you don’t hear shit about Berry Gordy no more, know what I mean? Same thing with Suge Knight.

Have you seen the "Biggie & Tupac" documentary.
Yeah I’ve seen that. What did you think? When you see that little fat white muthafucka snitching his damn brains out?

Well all the evidence certainly points to one person...
Suge Knight, right? He was just jealous, and look where he is now – in jail. So you know, fuck him. I hope someone sticks him in there.

So you thought the documentary was on point?
It was some real shit. I know the little dude that shot that. They could never catch homie though, ‘cause I be moving too quick. I’m in the streets, so you’ve really got to catch me in the streets.

I thought it was strange that a documentary maker from the UK could uncover more information than the entire LAPD investigation.
That’s what I’m saying. You know why? Because Suge was paying the police.

What do you think of hip-hop’s latest marketing tool – recording a diss track towards 50 Cent or Eminem.
Who did that? Ja Rule?

Well yeah, but I’m hearing rappers come out of nowhere to diss these guys. It’s totally fabricated beef.
It’s just because they’re on top. Must be some Ja Rule fans who are dissing him or something, because I’m dissing the fuck out of him [Ja Rule] too. I’m down with Eminem and 50 Cent to the fullest. We just did a DPG-Unit album in four days on the road. Me, Snoop, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks and Soopafly. That’s a real hot album. Whoo Kid is putting that together. And that Tupac track with 50 Cent (“The Realest Killas”), I put that together.

I thought it might have been one of your Tupac verses.
Who else is going to have some Tupac verses? Hey, I’ve got about 50 more Tupac tracks that I’m saving until 2050. I’ve got Tupac tracks up the ass that nobody going to hear. His mother is trying to get them off me, but hey, what you going to do, pull a gun on me? I don’t know where they at, do you know where they at? [laughs] And the Outlawz, they mad at me but I don’t give a fuck about the Outlawz because they’re all bitches.

I read Young Noble was saying you’re disrespecting Tupac’s legacy and stuff like that...
You know why he’s saying that? Because they want the songs I got. They don’t have no more songs. It’s over for them. They need something to get back, and they think they’re going to get my songs. Fuck that shit. Fuck the Outlawz and fuck everybody down with them. I ain’t never seen them bust one fuckin’ gun. I ain’t heard nothing from the Outlawz in years. They ain’t putting in work, it’s over for them.

Didn’t they align themselves with Ja Rule and those guys?
Yeah, that’s why they bitches and punks and pussies. Go over there and sing with Fat Albert and them [mimicks Ja’s singing].

What did you think of the Benzino-Eminem “beef”? The most ridiculous shit you’ve ever heard?
That was the most jokingest shit in the fucking world. Benzino... you see, he out of the rap game right now. He’ll never get another record deal. The only way he might get another record deal is through the Source. Fuck The Source. I’m on the cover of XXL. That’s who I’m rolling with. I don’t give a fuck about The Source magazine. Dave Mays too, he’s a bitch. All them muthafuckas over there, Suge Knight done punked them. I’m not scared of Suge Knight. If Suge Knight walked in this room right now, somebody gonna die – and I’d get up out of here.

I think you and Snoop did a lot in terms of breaking down Suge’s “boogieman” image...
I was the first one to say “fuck Suge Knight”. On my “This is the Life I Live” I said: “A gangsta ass decision was made / to have Marion Suge Knight straight blown away / I want to run the streets and rule the world...”. Then I pumped Snoop up to say the same thing. Now everyone is seeing the real character of Suge Knight, he ain’t doing shit. His hitman was doing all his dirt, but he’s dead right now. When I come out with my book, the whole world will be like “Damn!”. It ain’t snitching though, I ain’t a snitch. It’s just the truth. Just telling the truth about a bitch ass muthafucka who fucked up the rap game. He got rid of two people I liked – I liked Tupac and I liked Biggie. He’s the devil.

Did you know anything about the ins and outs of the Tupac-Biggie beef?
Suge fuelled the fire. It was a bunch of bullshit.

Has Snoop really quit smoking?
For a second [laughs]. I’ve got him on tape here. That’s his line at the shows we do: “Muthafuckas thought I stopped smoking weed. I did... for a second.” We’ve got a new song called “Smoke Weed, Get Drunk & Fuck”. That’s a real big song we’ve been doing through the tour, now Jay-Z, 50 Cent and them, they’re using it too. So you see them on tour and they’re saying our words too. That’s cool though, ‘cause we friendly people. Until you fuck over us. To any people we cool with, don’t fuck over us. Because we’re the realest thing in hip-hop. I’m the loyalest person living, when I say I’m down and committed to something, I’m down and committed to it. I’m cool with everyone I’m down with. That’s why people like the Outlawz are mad at me, because they’ve been fucked. And they did some bitch-ass shit. Kurupt, he’s a bitch. Roscoe, he’s a bitch.

We spoke about the wave of 50 Cent/Eminem disses before, are there any other trends in hip-hop that piss you off?
Everything else is cool. Except for the West Coast, everyone over here is feuding right now. You heard about what happened to Xzibit right?

Nah, what happened?
Well he was in the restaurant the other day, and some Latinos came in and asked if they could get an autograph. He was brushing them off, like fuck ‘em. So one of the Latinos started poking at him, then Xzibit said, “If you keep poke me again we’ll have to go outside and fight.” So the Latino did it again. Then they go outside, and the Latino dude socked him and another Latino came across and slapped him in the head with a 40 ounce bottle – almost cut his lips off. He got 86 stiches in his mouth. So I don’t think Xzibit going to be rapping no more. He’s got to get plastic surgery. He’s been crying for two days. But if you act like a bitch, something will happen to you. So Kurupt, something will happen to you soon. JT tha Bigga Figga, you’re a bitch too.

What happened with JT?
I did two songs with him and he didn’t pay me for them, so I beat him up. He’s mad about that, then Suge Knight punked him so he feels like he has to roll with Suge Knight.

What do you think about C-walking now being a mainstream dance, rather than something gang affiliated?
Where I’m from, if you C-walk then you have to represent. Like Snoop said: “Quit C-walking if you ain’t a gang banger.”

You even see Aussie kids doing it now, do you look at that as a cool thing, that it’s reached across the globe, or a sign of disrespect?
Shit, they want to be Crips [laughs]. Me and Snoop, we the King Crips. Kurupt, he ain’t a Crip, he’s a Blood. But when I see them Crip Walking, I quote that line from Snoop. Because if Bloods come up in here, what are you going to do? Freeze up? Because they will check you and see what set you’re from, then you really have to represent. Like when I walk down the street, I’m in Seattle right now, there’s a gang of Bloods down the street and I’m walking by myself. But they respect me because they know I’m not playin’ no games. I’ll get down and whip somebody’s ass.

Are you still going to do any work with Ras Kass when his legal shit is sorted out?
Fuck no I ain’t working with no fuckin’ Ras Kass. He’s in jail right now, he’s going to do about four years. Him and Xzibit and them ran out on us one day, we had a fight at the Venice Shoreline. We was in there, and they were like “Long Beach niggas...”, and we were squabbling and he was saying he was from Carson.

I remember you saying you wanted to help get his record out.
I was at first. I was just saying if he had nowhere to put it out, I’ve got a distribution deal, I can put it out. Because if you’re going to jail you need some loot. Put the record out! I’ll get you paid. I’m not going to take any money from you. Why would I take the money from your record when I can put my own shit out. I can put out three albums in a week. I put records out every week and every month. I’m going to drop my whole catalog again, with the DVDs and everything.

Who is an artist that you’re a fan of that most people wouldn’t pick you being into?
I’m pretty much into everything. I’m into rock n roll. I’m working on a rock n roll album right now. Me and Snoop got a rock album coming out called “Nine Inch Dicks”. Me, Snoop and the Snoopadelics.

What’s up with you and Natina (Kurupt's ex-girlfriend)?
That’s just some shit we put together as a little joke, everyone thinks it’s real though, huh? I’m divorced though, I’m not trying to get married again. Fuck a bitch. I ain’t saying fuck Natina though, that’s my homegirl.

Australia’s had Snoop, Bad Azz, Kurupt all toured Australia...
I’m the only one that’s never been down there!

When are you going to hit Australia?
When I get this passport shit together. I’m working on it right now. When I do my So So Def deal I think that’s when I’m coming down there with Jermaine. We gonna represent real big for So So Def.

You must have got a good deal with So So Def to leave what you were doing with your own label, in terms of money and creative control.
Yeah, I’ve got creative control for myself, and I’m a producer too so I’m happy to be in there to get some more work as well. And I like Jermaine, we’ve always been friends, since Kris Kross. I’ve been a fan of his and he’s been a fan of mine. I’m just happy that someone gave me the chance, someone that’s not scared of Suge Knight. And I want to do it to Da Brat [laughs]. I want Da Brat to be my girlfriend.

MY ADVENTURES WITH KANYE WEST AND JAY-Z

BREAKING NEWS: Kanye West and Jay-Z just released a new album! While I'm not going to break down "Watch the Throne" here (I already did that on Twitter, using an awesome NBA analogy), instead I'll enthrall you with a couple of cool stories/riviting tales about my run-ins with the Throne blokes.

KANYE WEST: When Kanye first toured Australia, he wasn't quite KANYE WEST!!!!!!!! yet, if you know what I mean. He was that guy in the bear suit who used Chipmunk samples on every track he produced. Still, I was a massive fan (don't click on that link until you've read this post, unless you love reading the same story twice).

So when I found out Kanye was touring, I was psyched. When I found out I'd be DJing his afterparty, I was psyched-psyched. So before the afterparty I checked in with the promoter to see if there was anything I should or shouldn't play (not that Kanye had public beef with anyone at the time, but still wanted to check). Got told nope, just rock it. Cool!

Night is going well, then a couple of minutes before I'm due to start my set I get a message from upstairs (not God, I mean upstairs in the VIP area) that Kanye only wants to hear his own tracks. Now I'm not sure if this is from the man himself or an overzealous handler/groupie (FUN FACT: a lot of the demands that come from artists in club environments come from their weed carriers and have nothing to do with the artist's wishes), but realise that as a solo artist Kanye only has two albums out at this time. And this is pre-Serato, so I've got two crates of records to work with.

A couple of songs into my set, Kanye jumps on the mic and starts talking shit, gets me to stop the music, talks some more shit, I drop "Through the Wire" and everyone loves his and my balls. I didn't play all Kanye tracks for my two hour set, but I played most of his club-playable shiz and a heap of Kanye-produced stuff. Oh, you can click on that "massive fan" link now.

JAY-Z: I didn't get to meet Jay when I DJed his first ever Australian concert (it fills me with much pride and a +100000000000 ego boost whenever I type/say/think about DJing at Jay's first Aussie concert), but it was still an entertaining evening. A couple of minutes before Jay arrived at the venue, I was hanging backstage with a friend of mine who worked for Universal - I'd already finished my work for the night, playing music between each performer's changeover - we get the word that we need to vacate because Jay is about to arrive. I didn't mind getting thrown out (we were getting thrown out from backstage to right beside the stage, it's not like we were getting tossed from the venue), but it was funny to see EVERYONE get thrown out. From the lowest of groupies, the "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM" club promoters and even the highest of higher-ups at record labels, we all got the boot so Jay could have access to every single dressing room, media room, conference room, everything on offer in the bowels of the Sydney Entertainment Centre (maybe he just wanted to look at Damian Keogh's retired Sydney Kings jersey in private, I'm not sure).

I did get to speak to Memphis Bleek though, nice chap.

GZA INTERVIEW (2003)

The Wu-Tang Clan are touring Australia this week, so I've exhumed this GZA interview from the old djleonsmith.com archives for your reading pleasure. (P.S. Someone bring the Wu to Bada Bing this Thursday night. Hey, RZA loves it!)

You're well known for your tracks like "Fame" and "Publicity", where you take one topic and flip it on its head for a whole track. Do you sit down with the intent to write a track like that, or does it happen when you don't expect it?
The idea kinda pops in my head. If you go back to "Labels", it was something that popped in my head, but it was sparked from something I heard. When it came to doing "Publicity", it was an idea that was sparked from someone else. It might have been me just talking to someone and they say, "Hey, you know what, you should do that like 'Labels'". Because after I did "Labels", I didn't want to do another song like that. I just felt like, what can I do another song like that about. Then I had the idea for the magazine thing...when I did "Publicity", it was originally a line that was part of someone else's rhyme. I looked at it and though, you know, that's dope, let me flip that. With "Fame", it was something I said, and my producer said, "You know what, you should make that the continuation to 'Labels' and 'Publicity'".

When did you first realise you had an exceptional talent for rhyming?
Umm...at a very early age, maybe at the age of 11, back in the '70s. I realised it because I outshined a lot of other MCs who were involved in the artform. I would outshine those in school, in the parks, that's when I realised I had a special gift.

You're considered a very intellectual MC, where did your knowledge come from?
Many different things, books, TV. Just basic information. I was explaining to another writer, my knowledge comes from life itself. I'm fascinated by life. I usually watch the Discovery Channel, the Learning Channel and the History Channel, and I get a lot of stuff from there. Those shows have great narration. I read a lot of books and scripts as well. I learn from there, I take little words that I don't know and I look them up, you know, when I write a rhyme I carefully craft my words. Writing is an evolutionary process for me. I write rhymes like you would write a script or a novel. Every word is considered and then re-considered. I know a lot of lot of rappers don't write like that - no words are considered. They just think, they put it down, and that's it. I usually do about six drafts for every rhyme.

I guess you prefer writing over freestyling then.
Exactly. I don't like to freestyle at all. I will, and I can, but...I won't say it's nothing creative, but, you know, when someone starts freestlying and it's comparable to the rhymes I write, then I'm all for freestyling. Until then, there's nothing interesting about it. I could do that all day: "Here I am, sitting on the phone, doing this interview, sitting all alone, in my house...". Big fuckin' deal! You understand? There's nothing creative, there's nothing fly, nothing interesting about that.

You come across as a very serious person. What do you do for fun?
I'm always having fun. I know I might come across as serious if you listen to my songs, but if you know me, I'm not that serious. I still have a lot of youth in me, I play games, I play chess. I'm a real kid at heart when I want to be. If you listen to me lyrically, I write strong lyrics, but they're not preachy. I never come off as preachy. If I was that serious in that sense, everything would be preachy - "go to school, don't smoke, stay off drugs!".

Did you play your Wu-Tang PlayStation game at all?
A little bit. I'm not into video games much though. My son played it. When I play video games I like stuff like Tetris on the Gameboy. I like strategic games. You know, with some of the fighting games I can just put my fingers on the buttons, not look at the screen and still win. There's nothing skilful about that. When it comes to videogames, I like games like golf, bowling, Wheel of Fortune, Tetris. And old school games like Asteroids, Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, those are the kind of games I like. I'm not into the new stuff.

Who are some of your favourite artists, both old and new school.
I don't know, I listen to many different types of music. I listen to a lot of music and don't know the artist. I listen to a lot of old stuff from back in the day, I'm kind of stuck in that chamber, I listen to a lot of old school hiphop. I write a lot of new stuff based on old music, old vibes. As far as hiphop though, I'm not really feeling anything that's new out there - but I'm really feeling Eminem. The way he constructs songs, his professionalism that he brings to the game, his concepts, his videos, his songs have hooks, they have stories, they're visual. He's not the deepest lyricist, but he's visual. Big up to Em. I'm feeling Nas too. But you know, the level that I'm on...I'm not a flossy type of MC, but I can relate to some of the MCs out there in that chamber. I like Jadakiss, I think he's lyrical. I might be leaving out a lot of guys. Of course, my Clan. I've always liked Redman as well.

What did you think of the whole Eminem-Benzino controversy?
I don't really know what sparked it, and I don't want to talk about one or the other. I don't know what got Benzino mad or angry, but I know Eminem as a lyricist, when he's throwing down...I don't look at him as a Vanilla Ice - there's no comparison. I look at Eminem as an MC, as an artist, with ideas and concepts. And I respect his shit - this is truthfully speaking - I respect Eminem's shit more than 95 per cent of the fuckin' music that's out there. I'm not into the bling blings - don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the individuals that do that - but there's so much of that shit, it's like watching the same movie over and over. All this shit about cars, Eminem don't rhyme about that. I've never rhymed about cars. I don't rhyme about women and being in the bar, being in the club. All that shit is played out. I haven't heard the whole Benzino album so I don't know exactly what he rhymes about, I don't know his style, but I'm feeling Em's style. I don't know the foundation of their beef, but I don't look at Eminem as some Vanilla Ice cat with no talent who just came in and took over. I see him as an artist who's doing his thing. He's got a lot of fuckin' skills. Even his song, "Lose Yourself" - to me, it's a perfect song. You know, I'm a writer. [Starts rhyming] "His palms are sweaty..." - I can visualise that, because I went through that. I can relate, the way he broke it down. Then the hook, "You better lose yourself in the music, the moment, you want it, you better never let it go..." - that's something all artists should listen to. A lot of artists need to look at Eminem and re-structure their shit and start making creative, interesting music.

I understand your 11-year-old son has already started rhyming...
Oh yeah, he's got some stuff. He's going to be totally different to what's out there.

Not Lil' Bow Wow Part 2 then.
I wouldn't even say that. Not to take from Bow Wow. I understand some people might look at him like that though - he wears braids, but he's been wearing those since birth. But sometimes people see him out and they be like, "Lil' Bow Wow!", there's no harm in that. But musically, he's on a totally different level.

More like his Dad?
Exactly. More visual, a whole lot more visual. A lot of story-telling and descriptions.

Is there anything new from Wu-Tang in the pipeline?
Yeah, as we speak now this is the 10th anniversary for Wu-Tang. So expect an album this year, except something on DVD, but definitely look for a banging album this year.

What about ODB, what's his situation at the moment?
I haven't spoken to him in a while...he's doing alright. They've kept him a little longer than was expected, he should have been out in November. He might have another case once he gets out as well, so I don't know, but hopefully he will be home soon. He's been locked down for damn near two years.

Do you have a favourite Wu track, where it seemed like everything clicked in the studio?
"Triumph" and "Protect Ya Neck".

You mentioned before that you write songs like you would write a script, but I understand you also actually write scripts.
Yes, I've just started writing them. I haven't completed a whole one yet, but I'm working on three or four different ideas at the moment. I have one strong idea that I'm working on right now, it's based on real events. I just write scene by scene though...something might happen, like me, RZA and Raekwon in the studio, so I'll write a scene about that. I work on songs like that, I'm always working on three or four different things at one time.

A lot of rappers make a point to announce that they're retiring after their next album, or they have their little farewell publicity tours...has their been a point in your career when you've thought about hanging up the mic?
I have thought about it, but only in the sense of I want to move on, do other things. You know, I want to do film, which would still tie me back into music. I'll always be involved with music on some level. But I'm kind of fed up with music, in terms of the labels, the politics that goes on, I'm kind of disgusted with it in that sense. I'm not backing out because I feel I'm washed up, I feel like I'm getting incredibly stronger, in terms of my writing. You know, I was looking at this review of my album that was in the Source, and the girl said, she was speaking about "Fame", how it's no comparison to "Publicity". I just thought, what is she listening to? Because, and don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this from a negative or jealous standpoint, but if it was someone else, who did "Fame", say someone like Jay-Z, it would have been the best fuckin' rhyme ever written in the world. I mean, if you listen to the rhyme: "They were told not to ride in Patty's Hearse and stay out of Charles' Manson. They drove Abraham's Lincoln across the Todd Bridge expansion." Who do you know who can use names in that way?

It's like you've got the burden of expectations.
Exactly! And not to big myself up, but I've never seen anyone use people's names in that fashion. You know, "Larry's Bird flew out of Nicolas' Cage." Who rhymes like that, you know what I'm sayin'?

WELCOME TO XO - VOLUME ONE

Who saw this coming? Besides anyone who I've mentioned this to in the past five years. Back story - when XO exploded onto the Sydney clubbing scene back in 2006, people were asking for a XO mixtape. It was something I wanted to do and had every intention of doing, but for one reason or another it never happened. For a while I was talking to the CTMC/Alien Gang lads about getting them to do every track on the mixtape, but that fell through, then XO ended and I kind of forgot about putting together "Welcome to XO" (but every cloud has a silver lining, and eventually the public got "Welcome to Bada Bing" late last year).

ANYWAY. Last night I was messing about in Ableton, grabbed 20 tracks from my "XO Classic" Serato crate and started putting together a little XO set, just for my own amusement. After a couple of tracks, it sparked my memory of the "Welcome to XO" mixtape concept, so while I was laying down tracks I started going through the old XO photos I've got saved for some potential artwork. Came across the classic one of me passed out in the bathroom on my birthday, threw it into Photoshop and as the clock struck 7am I'd finished a simple mixtape, complete with artwork. It's not a cutting/scratching/DJ routines mixtape, it's just a stack of good music that we were known for playing at XO. Hope you enjoy it!

This is a follow-up to something I wrote almost three years ago. My goodness that's a long time. Anyway, back then I said in "WHERE THE WHITE WOMEN AT?" I'll break down the full list later, including females of all races, creeds and colours, where "the full list" = the list of celebrities I was targetting to hook up with, to help propel my DJ career into the stratosphere and get myself in New Idea as a focus of gossip, rather than a writer of gossip (which was my last regular job). Essentially, it's the DJ AM plan - that's him pictured above, with his ex-girl Nicole Richie, when he started seeing her his career exploded. (And like I always say when I mention DJ AM, while he was a "celebrity DJ", he was a great DJ first and foremost. Oh and R.I.P.)

Let's break up the entertainers with a sports star! Lauren is the only other person on this list who I've met, but that was strictly business (shoutout to EPMD), I interviewed her for SLAM Magazine a decade ago. We're exactly the same height, could you imagine us at public events towering over everyone? Not sure if a WNBA star would be cool with the whole strip club DJ deal though, they're high on the whole women's empowerment thing and would probably consider stripping degrading (I think it's the exact opposite, but we'll discuss that another day).

Easily one of my most fun gigs ever. EASILY. Unfortunately at the moment, most R&B/hiphop clubs are run with one musical policy - "keep it commercial". Ante Up is the complete antithesis of that - playing commercial tracks would get you bottled there. Well maybe not bottled, but you'd definately cop a nasty glare from across the dancefloor. Actually, you'd probably get bottled.

Before the gig, I'm not even going to bullshit you, I was nervous - new club, new crowd, I was coming in as an outsider. But after the reaction I got to the first couple of tracks I played, everything couldn't have been sweeter. I wanted to stay away from the cliched hiphop bangers, plus whenever I do a gig I always go in with the mindset that the promoters booked me to do me, not an imitation of other DJs on the bill. In this case I stuck to some classic hiphop, some newer stuff - which I felt especially safe playing after seeing the crazy response the DJ before me (Kase) got when he played this, a quick Outkast and Jay-Z megamix and even some local stuff.

Being the numbnuts that I am, I left the cables for my mp3 recorder at the Bing the night before so I didn't get to record my set (remember to jump on my Facebook page for weekly mixes live from the Bing). I've always wanted to play at Ante Up AND I've always wanted to play at the Burdekin for two entirely different reasons. Ante Up, because they play great music there (ie. the promoter's instructions to you are simply: "go nuts") and nights like that are hard to find. The Burdekin, because that's where I bought my turntables from 14 years ago! Yep, bought them second-hand (refurbished) from there - so since then every time I'd walk past that spot I'd get a tingly sensation in my loins. So get down there this Saturday for some good hiphop! I'm on from midnight.

You on my Facebook page yet? You should be, especially now that every week I'm going to be uploading a snippet (anything from 15mins-1hr) of a DJ Leon Smith Bada Bing set! This is live so there might be the odd mistake or a drunk strip club MC introducing the Bing girls over the mix, pretty much anything goes. If you haven't been to the Bing before it will give you a good indication of the kind of stuff I play there - really, it's pretty much what I'd play in a regular club set. Here's the first few I did, two are from a couple of Wednesdays ago (I usually don't do Wednesdays at the Bing, but this was a special one-off, you can catch me there every Thursday, Friday (dance set) and Sunday) and one from last Thursday.

LEON'S EPIC WEEKEND

Usually I don't do this (why is this blog starting off like R.Kelly’s ad-libs at the start of the “Ignition” remix?) but here’s a “what I did last weekend” recap. The reason I don’t do them all that often is because I’m more of a resident DJ who enjoys being at the same spots regularly, and saying “last week was awesome!” week in, week out, would get very boring, very quickly.

Last weekend was different though because I played at a couple of different spots that allowed me to drop a load (shoutout to Nick Manning) of different music, plus my regular spots were exceptionally good. I even commented on Facebook that it was an excellent weekend for DJing, so here’s a quick recap, breaking it down set by set, starting with...

THURSDAY 10pm
SWAG @ TRADEMARK
Hey, young DJs. Early sets are dope. I know a few kids trying to get into club DJing who have turned down early sets because they “are focusing on main sets”. If anyone said that to me I’d make a LeBron-style mental note to never give or recommend them for a job. As always, doing the first set at Trademark on Thursdays is always super-fun, you can play bits and pieces you wouldn’t be able to play in a main set (eg. “Heart of the City” – Jay-Z) and people were at the bar drinking and nodding their heads. Perfect.

THURSDAY 1am
BADA BING
It’s hard to say much about this set – mainly because a couple of dickheads (who shall remain nameless, let’s just call them “Monchacha” and “Fizz”) thought it would be funny to bust out the Chartreuse and my memory is wiped. Lucky this was the first set of mine at the Bing that I recorded! Will throw a snippet online soon.

FRIDAY 12am
ADDICTION @ THE BANK
Addiction is cool, it’s very commercial but those gigs can be crazy. Most of my set was between 120-130bpm, stayed away from some of the mega-hits so DJ Mo could be a star in the set after me, but everyone kept dancing (thanks for that). As much as I like playing new hip-hop and R&B, sets like this are just FUN.

FRIDAY 1am
SNAPBACK @ LE PANIC
Snapback is a new monthly event in the Cross and I’ve always wanted to play there. Why? Well, their flyers feature the DJs wearing basketball jerseys, and the music policy is “play any hip-hop you want”. Don’t mind if I do! My set jumped around from the Clipse, to some old school Biggie (by request), some Lil Boosie and Webbie, a few T.I. album cuts and even a stack of local stuff (Alien Gang, Monchichi, Mez). If I’m not back at Snappers next month I might kill myself, or at the very least listen to Linkin Park’s entire back catalogue and brood all night.

SATURDAY 11pm
ENCORE @ BROOKLYN HOTEL
The 11pm set/second set of the night can be the trickiest set to get right. You need to really start building the dance floor, but without totally burning the DJ who’s coming on after you to do the main set. It’s a delicate balance of finding older hits, newer stuff that sounds good but hasn’t hit the radio yet and a couple of bangers here are there. Well, last Saturday was made easy for me by the crowd going nuts for ANYTHING from the west coast (of the US, not Perth dumbass). When “Fuck Wit Dre Day” goes off, it’s a good night.

SUNDAY 1am
BADA BING
It wasn’t the busiest night at the Bing on Sunday, but having said that it was the busiest spot in the Cross, plus I added to my tally of “Surprise Me” drinks consumed (for those keeping score at home, I think the leaderboard looks like this: DJ Leon Smith 8, DJ Carl Alley 3, DJ Tikelz 2, Styalz Fuego 1, 360 1 – if I’m wrong someone correct me. And if you don’t know what a “Surprise Me” is, come to the Bing one night and ask). One good thing about Sunday night was that the requests I got were all for some real nice hiphop tracks, there’s nothing worse than being asked for dance when you’re playing hiphop (and vice-versa). It really was a chilled way to end my working weekend.

TOO MANY R.I.P. POSTS LATELY! It's confirmed that the King of the Hooks, Nathaniel "Nate Dogg" Hale passed away today, this is just way too depressing. As I mentioned last week in regards to DJs putting together their Biggie sets to mark the passing of the N-O-T-O-R-I-O/U-S-you-just-lay-down-slow, try to dig a little deeper than just playing "Regulate" this weekend. This will be my favourite Nate Dogg track that I'll be dropping. (And yes, technically it's not a Nate Dogg track, but the guy was that good he basically owned any track he was on.)

R.I.P. CLINTON GRYBAS

Three years ago on January 5 Clinton Grybas passed away, and it was one of the most shocking moments of my life that didn't involve a family member. I remember reading various news sites over my morning coffee (well, my "morning" coffee would be around 1pm) and seeing a headline like "TV star Grybas dies" and thinking to myself "oh there must be another Grybas on TV, couldn't be Clinton". Unfortunately, it was. Clinton was only 32, most basketball fans knew him from his work on the ABC and at the time of his death he was a rising star on Fox Sports as one of the main faces of their AFL coverage.

When I worked at Pro Basketball Today, if I ever needed any help in terms of game footage from NBL games, Clinton would always hook me up with game tapes from the ABC/NBL library (usually accompanied by a massive phone conversation about the world of hoops - he was one of the few basketball TV journalists who actually had a passion for the sport). Apart from that he was one of the nicest blokes you'd ever want to meet and catching up with him at NBL games was always fun times - like I said before, his passion for basketball was almost unmatched, hopefully he enjoyed our marathon basketball chats as much as I did. Still can't believe he isn't around. R.I.P. mate.

Whenever I add a new girl to my HOEZ section of the site (and once again, I use that term as a massive term of endearment, no diss), I generally hit up their Wikipedia page and other related information pages to find out some interesting stuff. And you know what I found out about Kristina Rose? Nothing and everything.

Nothing, in terms of I can't tell you something like "Kristina loves to play tennis and her favorite drink is Johnnie Walker mixed with green tea" (that's a fantastic drink, just quietly). But you know what - all you need to know about Ms. Rose can be found on her Twitter page, which is honestly one of the coolest adult entertainment chick twitter feeds you'll find - and not just for the random pictures of Kristina at home and on set, occasionally sans clothing. Right now I'm anxiously waiting to see what's going to unfold after her most recent tweet: "Today Brian Pumper learned two things. 1. How NOT to talk to porn girls & 2. That I do what I want."

This track isn't particularly new (it originally came out in 2008, which is like three decades ago in internet years), but it just shattered the record for "most played track in a weekend". Feel Free by Ricky Blaze feat. Jim Jones and Nicki Minaj was on a Nicki mixtape two years ago, now for the official release they've thrown Jimmy on there as well. Oh and let's count the amount of times it got played in one of my sets last week *counting in my head*... EIGHT TIMES. That has to be a record (if you're counting along, I only had seven gigs last week but I played it twice on Sunday at the Bing. Oh and Friday and Saturday nights at the Bing are dance sets but I usually end them with 30 mins of hiphop/R&B. So there you go.)

I'm playing this track, I F--ked The DJ by Tila Tequila, tomorrow night at the Bing for sure, it's a 100 per cent lock, but the only thing is do I open my set with it, close my set with it or just drop it somewhere in the middle. It's not often that I've had the urge to throw one of my set lists online anywhere, but last Sunday at the Bing was just one of those nights where everything clicked. I don't just mean in terms of DJing either, I had the perfect amount of alcohol as well - not having a hangover on Monday after four nights of work is a rare treat my friends. Still got buzzed of course, yes sir!

Charles Oakley, former NBA enforcer and current enforcer for Michael Jordan, and I had words today on Twitter. Which almost gave me a heart attack. After posting the recipe for one of his delicious Oak's turkey burgers, I made the (innocent) comment that it was "food porn". Oak's response is the screen cap above. I told him that I was commenting on how good it looked, his next response is below. Potential crisis averted.

(FUN FACT: While I was growing up, the main players I emulated on the court were Oak, Michael Cage and Xavier McDaniel. None of this Kobe and LeBron rubbish.)
